ESPN Jr. 300 DE Cowart has UF on top
By Derek Tyson
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- ESPN Junior 300 defensive end Byron Cowart (Seffner, Fla./Armwood) named Florida his leader after the Gators held their annual Friday Night Lights camp.
The 6-foot-3, 248-pound athlete said he enjoyed spending time with other 2015 Florida targets CeCe Jefferson (Glen St. Mary, Fla./Baker Co.) and Sherrod Pittman (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast).
"It was a good experience," Cowart said. "I came out here looking forward to meeting up with CeCe and Sherrod. We are going to have a good chemistry. Hopefully we can play together -- that's what we are looking forward to."
Cowart, who also holds offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida State and South Carolina, said the camp was enough to push the Gators into the lead.
"They are No. 1. I mean, I like them," Cowart said. "Decision-wise, I'm going to wait until the All-American game. I'm pretty sure stuff is going to get out, but I want to wait until the All-American game."
The four-star defensive end said the Florida coaches know how he feels about them.
"They just know," Cowart laughed. "I'm still open, but who knows? Something might happen. They know I want to have fun with the recruiting process. But at the end of the day who knows? We'll wait and see."
Recently Florida has signed Alvin Bailey and Matt Jones from Armwood and has placed an emphasis on the Tampa area. Cowart said the new pipeline helps Florida's chances.
"That's a big help," he said. "Because I know we have a good pipeline, so they wouldn't treat one of our guys wrong. I'm close with Dante [Fowler Jr.], Matt, Alvin, and to see those guys do great things is just a plus for me."
