Watch List DT doubles offer list
By Radi Nabulsi
ESPN Watch List defensive tackle Joshua Frazier (Springdale, Ark./Har Ber) has doubled his offer list in the last month. The 6-foot-4, 330-pound junior has added offers from USC, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and now Georgia.
“I talked to coach [Chris] Wilson and he explained that they wanted to offer me a full scholarship to the University of Georgia,” Frazier said. “He said the reason they offered me was that they did a background check on me, talking to my coaches about the people I surround myself with. They liked what my coach had to say about me, how positive I am and my work ethic on the field. He saw my film and really liked my film, too.”
Frazier is somewhat familiar with the Bulldogs having watched a few games and received recruiting literature. But Thursday was the first time he had spoken to a coach from the school.
“I kind of watched them last year with that really good linebacker Jarvis Jones,” Frazier said. “He is a stud on defense. He caused havoc and just wrecked everybody he went up against. The way that their defense played in that close game -- they played really good, but Alabama just had that edge at the very end. Georgia competes at a very high level, and that is what I really like about them. I am hearing how the college is very beautiful, and it is a really nice place to be. I would like to visit there and the other schools that have offered and see where this takes me.”
The massive junior watched the SEC Championship game knowing that he could one day play for the Tide.
“Alabama was my third offer,” Frazier said. “They offered right after my sophomore year. I went down there for my first major D-line camp. I only had two offers. My coach told me, ‘If you do good, they are going to offer you. If you do bad, well, it is a make-or-break situation.’ They really liked me but hadn’t seen what I could do. We did the one-on-ones and I won about 10 times and only got beat once, and these were some big prospects going to the Alabama camp.
“Then they split us all up, and I got put with the senior group because they wanted to see what I could do against that top talent. So I went against those 2012 prospects, and I did really well and coach [Nick] Saban called me back. My head coach and I went into his office and he said, ‘We like your agility, your speed at your size and your explosiveness. We want to offer you a full-ride scholarship to Alabama.’ So I thought that was pretty special.”
Alabama only lost one game last year -- to Texas A&M -- and the Aggies would like to beat the Crimson Tide for Frazier’s services as well.
“Texas A&M offered me yesterday,” Frazier said. “They are on the rise. They beat Alabama, and that really shocked everybody. They started recruiting me my junior year. I started to get bombarded with letters from Texas A&M. They sent me notes and stuff about how they were coming into the SEC and, ‘This is our coming-out party. We are ready to go compete in the SEC.’ ”
“I guess that offer from Texas A&M was really special, too. College Station is right by where some of my family lives in Houston. College Station is not too far away, so we will just have to see. Of course having Johnny Football [Manziel] coming off winning the Heisman is always a good thing. It is a pretty special deal getting offered by them.”
More offers are on the horizon, as Frazier has caught the attention of other top programs that want to beef up their defensive lines.
“LSU and Mississippi State have been sending me stuff since my sophomore year,” Frazier said. “Miami and UCLA are really interested in me. I just started getting stuff from the Texas Longhorns. Missouri, Florida State, Florida and Arizona are looking at me. So it is starting to get heavy.”
