Watch List OL impressed by third U-M visit
By Chantel Jennings
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Several fans were hoping that this might be the visit that pushed Watch List offensive lineman Mason Cole (Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake) over the top, bringing a fourth 2014 commitment to Michigan.
But fans can rest easy. No, he didn’t commit, but he left Michigan very impressed. And following his visit he said that his pending commitment to any of his top schools could come at any time now. The 6-foot-5, 266-pound lineman has a top four of Michigan, Notre Dame, Clemson and Florida State, in no particular order.
And if Cole plans on making a decision soon, this late visit could be crucial.
“This does a lot [for Michigan],” Cole said of the visit. “I like it a lot. It’s a special place. There’s nothing really like it.”
It was the third time Cole has been on campus and this time he had the opportunity to get to know 2014 commits Michael Ferns (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville) and Wilton Speight (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School), as well as freshman offensive tackle Erik Magnuson.
“The best part was just spending time with the current players and the other recruits that were there,” Cole said, “just getting to know everyone more than I already do.”
Cole said that he was able to have breakfast with Michigan coach Brady Hoke and a few other recruits on Saturday. Offensive line coach Darrell Funk was out of town Saturday, but joined the recruits Sunday for the Michigan basketball game, and before the game, Funk and Cole were able to talk for nearly two hours.
He documented most of his enjoyment of Ann Arbor on Twitter, and made sure to tweet Sunday before leaving, “Really enjoyed my time in AA! I love #WolverineNation #GoBlue.”
