Vols focusing on Knoxville-area talent
By Dave Hooker
Tennessee won't ignore local talent. That was evident by some of the attendees for the Vols' junior day on Saturday.
Akeem Cooperwood was one of many Knoxville-area prospects to attend the event which included a tour of the Volunteers' newly upgraded facilities, a review of academic support and the chance to attend the Tennessee-Kentucky basketball game, in which the Vols won 88-58.
The 6-foot-7, 315-pound Cooperwood, who is from Fulton High School in Knoxville, was impressed with Tennessee's new coaching staff under first-year head coach Butch Jones.
"I like the staff," Cooperwood said.
Cooperwood is still waiting on his first scholarship offer. Tennessee seems somewhat willing to do so.
"They want to see me at camp first," Cooperwood said, referring to Tennessee's summer junior event.
Cooperwood has received interest from several SEC and ACC schools.
