DE Jones sticks with Mississippi State

By RecruitingNation

Defensive end Chris Jones of Houston, Miss., No. 46 in the ESPN 150, stayed true to his longtime commitment to Mississippi State, announcing on Wednesday that he had signed with the Bulldogs.

Jones, who surged into the national spotlight after a breakout senior season and a starring role at several postseason events, took a hard look at Ole Miss late in the process.

What is the impact of Jones' decision?

Instant Analysis

What it means for Mississippi State: Holding onto Jones was vital. It would have been heartbreaking to lose a prospect properly evaluated early in the process who committed early as well, especially to rival Ole Miss.

What it means for the teams that lost out: Ole Miss will be fine. The Rebels have one of the top classes in the nation. As good as Jones is, he would have almost been a luxury.

Turning point: Once Mississippi State received Jones' commitment in June, it surely held a special place in his heart. Other schools weren't willing to do so at the time. While there was some concern, Jones never decommitted from the Bulldogs.

Surprise (scale of 1-5): 2. Ole Miss made a push but Mississippi State was always the school to which he remained committed.

Immediate impact (scale of 1-5): 4. Expect Jones to be an early contributor at Mississippi State. He has the frame and athleticism to be a standout underclassman.
