Tyler Boyd struggling with final decision
By Jared Shanker
With less than 24 hours until signing day, ESPN 300 athlete Tyler Boyd (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) is still wrestling with his decision.
That decision will come at 10 a.m. Wednesday at his high school with his teammates, his mother, Tonya Payne, told ESPN.com in a text message.
Earlier Tuesday, Payne said it was up in the air whether Boyd, No. 165 in the ESPN 300, would announce at 10 a.m. ET Wednesday at his high school with his teammates. Boyd will fax his letter of intent to Pittsburgh, Tennessee or West Virginia.
Rumors circulated Monday that Boyd was no longer committed to Pittsburgh. That was not the case, Payne said.
“He is still committed to Pitt,” she wrote in a text message around 1 p.m. Tuesday.
A Pitt commitment since Jan. 5, Boyd officially visited West Virginia the weekend of Jan. 25. Payne has been outspoken about her issues with the West Virginia coaching staff and said she would not agree with Boyd if he chose the Mountaineers. Tennessee hosted Boyd for an official visit this past weekend.
Payne said the family was considering making Boyd’s final decision private and behind closed doors as late as Tuesday afternoon.
