ESPN 300 ATH Boyd shuffles visits
By Jared Shanker
The recruitment of four-star athlete Tyler Boyd (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) has taken another major turn.
Boyd and his family were scheduled to host West Virginia for an in-home visit Friday night, but his mother Tonya Payne said she spoke with the West Virginia coaches Wednesday night and that plan has changed.
“Home visit with WVU has been cancelled,” she wrote in a text message.
Boyd, who committed to Pittsburgh at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 5, officially visited West Virginia last weekend. Payne has been vocal in her disapproval of the Mountaineers as a potential landing spot for Boyd.
Payne confirmed that Pittsburgh will still have an in-home visit tonight with Boyd, ranked No. 165 in the ESPN 300. It will be the last visit Boyd receives from a school. More importantly, the Panthers will have been the only program to make an in-home visit with Boyd.
Payne said Tuesday she has never hosted a college coach in her home.
Newcomer Tennessee is still in line to get an official visit from Boyd this weekend despite the commitment of ESPN 150 receiver Marquez North. Payne said she has no reason to believe her son will not make the trip to Knoxville.
“He hasn’t said anything about not going to visit,” she wrote.
Boyd is No. 16 among athletes nationally but projected as a receiver.
