In-state LB attends Tide's junior day
By Greg Ostendorf
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- If you look at his Facebook picture, it’s no surprise that ESPN Watch List linebacker Tre Williams is wearing an Alabama jersey in one of half the shot while sporting an Auburn jersey in the other half. The Alabama native says the two in-state schools are recruiting him the hardest.
Over the weekend, Williams was in Tuscaloosa for the Crimson Tide’s junior day.
“It went good,” he said. “I haven’t been to Alabama since the Texas A&M game, so it was nice to see Alabama again. We just did the basic stuff, just toured the school.
“I talked to some coaches. I talked to Coach [Kirby] Smart, Coach Lance [Thompson], Coach [Nick] Saban. They were basically telling me what position they wanted me at and all of the stuff about Alabama and about the team.
Added Williams, “Coach Smart told me he wants me to play inside linebacker.
The in-state junior was joined in Tuscaloosa by his teammate and 2014 offensive lineman Josh Casher. Alabama has shown interest, but Casher’s only offer to this point is Memphis.
It’s a little different for Williams. He currently has 14 scholarship offers from some of the top programs in the country, but he’s yet to name any favorites or narrow a list.
“It’s still the same,” he said. “It really won’t change much. I always enjoy going to a school, and I always have fun, but I still think of all of them as the same.”
Williams plans to attend Auburn’s next junior day, and he and his mom also want to visit Georgia on Feb. 16 for its junior day. He doesn’t have an offer from the Bulldogs yet.
