LB Walton excited for Auburn official visit

By Greg Ostendorf

Will Jonathan Walton's last official visit be the school he chooses? That’s what Auburn is hoping for as Walton plans to take his official visit to The Plains this weekend.

“I’m pretty much looking forward to everything,” he said. “I’ve been up there once for a camp, so I haven’t gotten to see everything. I’m excited.”

It will also give Walton a chance to meet with the new Auburn coaching staff and new head coach Gus Malzahn.

“I’ve always been close to him,” Walton said. “I’ve been talking to him since he was at Arkansas State. He’s a good guy.”

The 6-foot-1, 236-pound linebacker from Alabama committed to Penn State last month, but it didn’t last long. The two sides recently parted ways when defensive coordinator Ted Roof left for  a job at Georgia Tech.

Since then, more schools closer to home have started to show interest.  In addition to Auburn, Walton has picked up scholarship offers from both Mississippi State and Ole Miss. He’s also taken official visits to South Carolina and Tennessee.

After flirting with the Big 10, he’s now set on playing in the SEC.

“I grew up in the South, so in my head, I’ve always felt like the SEC is the conference that I want to play in,” Walton said. “I like the competition. I actually know a lot of people going to the SEC, and I like to compete against people I know.”
