USC trying to hang on to CB Ramsey

By Blair Angulo

USC cornerback commit Jalen Ramsey (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) took his fifth and final official visit over the weekend, visiting Los Angeles for the Trojans’ big recruiting get-together.

The No. 4-rated cornerback returned home still a member of USC’s class, but two other schools appear to have a realistic chance to change his mind before national signing day. The Trojans, it seems, will have to sweat it out for Ramsey until the end.

“The USC trip was great,” his father, Lamont Ramsey, said in a text message. “The weather was great, (we) spoke with the academic people again, had time with the coaches, Jalen hung out with the players (and) recruits, just a great weekend.”

Lamont affirmed his son’s commitment to USC, but said two other schools are scheduled to meet with him this week.

“He has in-home visits this week from USC, FSU and Florida,” Lamont said. “He’ll be hosting the head coaches of those schools the following week but the schedule isn’t set yet.”

There have been constant whispers surrounding Ramsey’s recruitment ever since the top-ranked player in Tennessee visited Florida on Sept. 21 along with high school teammate Max Staver, a Gators quarterback commit. Ramsey also visited Mississippi State (Nov. 30) and Washington (Dec. 7), but those schools appear to be out of the race.

Ramsey visited Florida State on Jan. 11 -- a date he had previously set aside for Alabama. When the Seminoles hired former Crimson Tide secondary coach Jeremy Pruitt to be the new defensive coordinator, Ramsey set his eyes on Tallahassee.

The situation becomes even murkier given the unknown status of USC defensive backs coach Marvin Sanders under new Trojans defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, who was officially hired Friday just hours before recruits arrived for the big weekend.

“After next week there will be no more visits,” Lamont said. “(Jalen) isn’t doing any interviews at this time. There is no announcement coming on anything this week. It had been put out there by someone that he had decommitted, that isn’t true. He’s still evaluating his choices and is only dealing with three schools [USC, Florida and Florida State].”
