Chequan Burkett talks visits, AU interest
By Greg Ostendorf
Montgomery, Ala., senior Chequan Burkett took his first of three scheduled official visits to Arkansas State this past weekend, and it gave him a chance to meet the Red Wolves’ new head coach, Bryan Harsin.
“Coach Harsin, he’s going to continue building at Arkansas State, and he wants me to be a part of that,” Burkett said. “On the visit, I liked the coaching staff. They were making jokes, but I could tell they were really serious about recruiting me. The vision that Coach Harsin has for the program -- he’s adding facilities and new jerseys and things like that.”
Of his eight offers, Burkett said that Arkansas State, Central Florida and Vanderbilt are the three schools that stand out. He’s planning to take an official visit to UCF this weekend.
The Alabama native has also been hearing a lot from Auburn since former Arkansas State head coach Gus Malzahn took the same position with the Tigers. Malzahn first offered Burkett at his previous job, but it was new defensive backs coach Charlie Harbison and the rest of the staff who has been impressed with his film.
“Coach [Rhett] Lashlee brought my film over from Arkansas State and showed it to them, and they really liked it,” Burkett said. “They put me at the top of their list for recruiting. They want to get me down there on an official visit.”
Burkett plans to take his official visit to The Plains next weekend, and he believes if everything goes well, he could receive an offer from Auburn. With the offer, he says the Tigers would move to the top of his list.
