Junior QB Sean McGuire garners interest

By Jared Shanker

Franklin (Wis.) quarterback Sean McGuire is a perfectionist, but he even had to give himself some credit after his junior season.

The 6-foot-3, 202-pound signal-caller threw for 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for eight more scores. A starter since his sophomore season, McGuire ran the ball much more as a junior.

He’s a passer that can run and not the other way around, and he says his biggest asset is his arm. His game is more than arm strength, though.

“Quarterback is more than having a big arm. I bring intangibles, feel I’m a vocal leader,” McGuire said.

Colleges are taking notice of McGuire, too. When Matt Canada left Wisconsin as its quarterbacks coach for NC State, he immediately began telling new Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren about McGuire -- except Doeren already was aware of him as he was recruiting him at Northern Illinois.

New NIU coach Rod Carey, the former offensive coordinator for the Huskies, is continuing to recruit McGuire, too.

“The scenario with NC State and NIU worked out so well,” McGuire said. “The coach at NIU, I love and respect him a ton and would love to play for him. [NC State is a] great ACC school and is a beautiful place and great academics.”

NC State and Michigan State are two early favorites for McGuire, who said he speaks with the Spartans coaching staff the most. He visited East Lansing this summer and has a strong relationship with Brad Salem.

“I get handwritten letters from them,” he said. “They’re one of my favorites.”

Duke is also making an early impression on McGuire, who has been hearing from the Blue Devils since his sophomore season. The early attention from Duke has them toward the top of McGuire’s list. McGuire will make a visit to Duke and NC State sometime in the coming months.

His next visit will likely go to Minnesota for a junior day Feb. 2, but he might visit Nebraska on Jan. 26.

Missouri also is showing interest.
