Higdon travels far to find perfect fit
By Corey Long
Defensive back Barry Higdon (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna) felt the closest connection with a program over 6,000 miles away. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior said distance would not be a factor in his final decision, but did an official visit to Hawaii over the weekend change his mind?
Higdon gave his verbal commitment to Hawaii over the weekend, choosing the Warriors over offers from Akron, Kent State, Toledo and Bowling Green.
The difference for Higdon was a strong relationship with his recruiting coach, Chris Demarest.
“Coach Demarest is just a straight shooter and a guy that I could immediately relate to,” Higdon said. “He is a coach that anyone should want to play for.”
As for the official, Higdon said it was the icing on the cake.
“Hawaii had been my favorite school for a while and seeing the school and the community really made my decision clearer,” Higdon said. “It’s a long way from home, but I think it’s the best situation for me on and off the field.
“My parents definitely support my decision and they are excited for me.”
Higdon said his commitment to Hawaii is solid but that won’t stop Cincinnati from visiting the prospect at school tomorrow and trying to get him on a visit.
“Coach [Eddie] Gran has reached out to me and I think they want to get me up there on the 25th,” Higdon said. “We’ll see what happens, I’m pretty happy with Hawaii.”
