Visits, top four set for three-star lineman
By Jared Shanker
Kenton Gibbs (Detroit/Cass Tech) has kept quiet on the recruiting front since the season began, but the Illinois decommitment has a top four and is planning his official visits.
The three-star defensive tackle said his top group is Illinois, NC State, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin. He already took an official visit to Illinois, and his next trip was supposed to be at Pitt this weekend. However, Gibbs postponed that trip, and his next visit will go to NC State.
Gibbs said he was being recruited by Northern Illinois previously, and when former NIU coach Dave Doeren took the job at NC State, he immediately began recruiting Gibbs. The Wolfpack have not offered, however.
New Wolfpack assistant Eddie Faulkner has a good relationship with Gibbs from his time as an assistant at Wisconsin.
The Badgers have not talked much with Gibbs since Gary Andersen was named coach.
“Wisconsin is still working it out, so I don’t know where we are at with that,” Cass Tech assistant coach Jermain Crowell said.
The official visit to Pittsburgh will now come Jan. 25, and Crowell is impressed at the job assistant Matt House has recruited Gibbs.
“He’s [House] a real good recruiter. I would send kids to play for Pitt,” Crowell said. “He’s got a good rapport. He made it his business to get to know [Gibbs]. The coaches that come in and tell you the real deal, those are the coaches that are going to get the furthest.”
Crowell said he believes a decision will come down to Illinois, NC State and Pitt.
