Fla. WR Barnes' stock on the rise

5/1/2012

Dunbar (Fort Myers, Fla.) wide receiver Johnell Barnes has had as good of an offseason as any player in the state.

As the 5-foot-11, 160-pound junior continues to rack up MVP awards at nearly every camp he attends, Barnes has also found his recruitment has picked up significantly in the last couple of months.

Early in the year, Barnes had an offer from UConn but has since added offers from Northwestern, Duke, Western Kentucky and UMass.

"It's been a good offseason and I think I've performed well and opened some eyes to my ability," Barnes said. "Winning the wide receivers MVP award at the Orlando NFTC was a pretty big deal."

Barnes said academics is the most important thing to him in terms of choosing a school. He currently has a 3.7 GPA and takes honors courses.

After the academics it could come down to his position on the field. He has dominated competition as receiver but some programs see him as a defensive back at the next level.

"It really doesn't matter to me because I think I can do either at a high level," Barnes said. "I can play receiver on the outside or in the slot and I could be a lock-down cornerback."

Barnes is looking at taking visits either over the summer or official visits during his senior year before making a decision.

"I'm young, I'm only 16 so this is going to be a process that requires some time and thought," Barnes added. "I want to be somewhere that I can play and I can get the best education."
