Lemond Johnson on hold with Auburn

11/26/2012

Three-star athlete Lemond Johnson (Cooper City, Fla./Cooper City) had nothing but good things to say about his encounters with Gene Chizik.

The 6-foot, 190-pound senior expressed disappointment after hearing Auburn dismissed Chizik on Sunday just two years after winning a national championship.

“He was always a real nice guy and very positive,” Johnson said. “I had a good feeling about him when I committed. I thought he would be a good coach to play for.

“I definitely wasn’t expecting this to come down so fast, but it’s the SEC, and it’s bound to happen if you aren’t winning or if there are signs of the program slipping.”

The coaches in charge of recruiting Johnson are defensive backs coach Willie Martinez and defensive coordinator Bryan VanGorder. Johnson said he hadn’t spoken to Martinez since Wednesday but expected to hear from him Sunday night or Monday.

As for Johnson’s commitment to Auburn, he’s sticking by the program for now.

“I was pretty set on going there, but now I’m going to have to stay open to other options,” Johnson said. “I want to see what happens with the rest of the coaching staff and go from there.”

Johnson said he received a call from Vanderbilt on Sunday and would look into the Commodores, along with LSU. He holds offers from Indiana, South Florida, Illinois, Central Florida, Boston College and several others.

“I’m going to see what happens this week and maybe I’ll think about scheduling a couple of officials,” Johnson added. “Right now I am waiting.”
