Class of 2014 running back Cortavious Givens (St. Petersburg, Fla./Admiral Farragut Academy) saw a Virginia coach keeping an eye on him during the spring, but the 5-foot-10, 195-pound junior didn’t have a chance to catch up with him.
Earlier this weekend Virginia assistant Vincent Brown took another look at Givens and made sure the junior running back knew to get in touch.
“My coach told me to call him because he thought they were ready to offer,” Givens said. “I called and he told me the good news."
Givens is still recovering from a knee injury that cut his promising sophomore year short. He has recently seen a slight increase in his carries and has scored four rushing touchdowns this year.
“The coaches here are still taking it easy with me,” Givens said. “I’m always begging for the ball more, but they are being conservative and I understand that.”
Givens is uncertain whether he will take a trip to Virginia to see or game or possibly go up for junior day. If he does go to Charlottesville he will have a friend there.
“Well Demeitre Brim is up there at Virginia, and I know him real well because we played [Lakeland] Victory Christian for the last couple of years,” Givens said. “He and I are real cool, so it would be nice to catch up with him and see how he likes it there.”
Givens now holds offers from Virginia and UMass with several major programs showing interest and probably waiting for him to return to the form he showed as a sophomore. Expect to see Givens hit several juniors and camps once the season is over.
“I’m going to try to have an active offseason whether I’m taking trips or training and playing 7-on-7,” Givens said. “I will definitely be putting in the work.”
