Watch List QB Luke Ward talks Vols, Vandy

10/3/2012

Nearby schools would seem to have a good shot at landing quarterback Luke Ward.

The ESPN Watch List prospect from Decaturville (Tenn.) Riverside grew up a Tennessee fan and is just a short drive from Vanderbilt's campus. Fandom hasn't resulted in college interest. While Ward said he is being recruited by Vandy, the Vols have shown no interest as of yet.

When asked about the Commodores, Ward said, “They're on the rise. There's no doubt about it. Coach [James] Franklin does a good job there. They're turning some heads. That's for sure. I like that place up there.”

Ward has proven a balanced quarterback this season. He has passed for over 1,000 yards and run for over 500.

“I think of myself as a pocket passer first off,” he said. “I think I can make plays in the run if I need to. It just comes down to making a play.”

A spread offense would seemingly be a good fit for Ward. That's the style of offense he runs in high school.

“I can see the field a lot better in shotgun,” Ward said.

Ward, however, won't be picky when those first schools come calling. He can evaluate prospective offenses when the offers start mounting.

“It would mean a lot,” he said. “I would love to get that offer. That's all I've wanted to do is play college football. Just to have that assurance that I'm going to be able to do that, that would just mean the world to me.

“That's my dream. It would be huge. I would treasure it with all my heart. I'd love it. I'm waiting on that first to come around and hopefully it keep rolling and rolling and rolling.”

Ward is being proactive in his recruitment. He visited Alabama last weekend and will visit Ole Miss this weekend.

“Coach (Hugh) Freeze, he's turning things around there,” he said. “They're running a good offense. I really like Ole Miss a lot.”

When asked of last weekend's visit to Tuscaloosa, Ward said, "I loved it. The gameday atmosphere was amazing."
