Shaw draws interest in and out of state

9/27/2012

Please excuse class of 2014 athlete Rashawn Shaw (Fort Pierce, Fla./Central) if he can’t think much beyond his big game against Vero Beach (Fla.) on Thursday.

"So far the season is going real well and we'll be facing Vero Beach (on Thursday),” Shaw said. “The game is going to be streaming on the Internet I believe. It should be a fun game.”

This year Shaw has been getting bigger -- he said Florida coaches measured him at 6-foot-2, 227 pounds -- and making several trips around the state.

On Saturday he was at The Swamp watching the Gators host Kentucky.

“It was a fun game, fun atmosphere for a noon game,” Shaw said. “I know things probably get real crazy for LSU and Alabama and stuff, but the fans were pretty energetic.”

This weekend Shaw will be attending the South Florida-Florida State game in Tampa.

“Really excited to watch those two programs,” Shaw said. “They have both been showing a lot of interest. I’m going to really watch the defenses closely and see how their linebackers and defensive ends look.”

Shaw said Florida State, South Florida and UCF have all been showing a lot of interest lately. He currently holds offers from South Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Utah and Connecticut.

He says the prospect of playing college football for a state school is exciting but he is open to the process.

“I live here and I think Florida produces the best football, so I would love to stay in state and play close to my family,” Shaw said. “But opportunities are everywhere and there are a lot of good programs out there.”

Shaw says that Auburn, Louisville, N.C. State and Pittsburgh are among the out-of-state programs that have reached out in the past month.

He is being recruited as a weak-side linebacker with some programs that run a 3-4, like Florida, looking at him as a “buck” linebacker.
