2014 DB D.J. Smith awaits Tide offer

On a secondary that included Kentucky signees Daron and Zack Blaylock, defensive back D.J. Smith (Marietta, Ga./Walton) was still able to contribute 43 tackles and two interceptions for the AAAAA state runner-up. Several programs have offered the 5-foot-11, 180-pound junior, and he feels another one is close.

"I think Alabama could be next to offer," Smith said. "That would mean a lot, just because its Alabama. They get after it and play physical."

The Tide might not have offered yet, but they are still among the schools Smith is interested in at the moment.

"Georgia, Florida and then Alabama stand out right now," Smith said.

This year, Walton is off to another 2-0 record, with hard-fought victories over Brookwood and McEachern. Smith won his fair share of battles with ESPN 300 wide receiver Kyrin Priester (Snellville, Ga./Brookw0od) at the Corky Kell Classic, and had several tackles and pass breakups two weeks ago against the Indians. He was slated to be in Athens to see Georgia take on Buffalo, but had to attend a wedding instead. The Bulldogs could still see him on campus soon.

"Georgia is nice," Smith said. "I get along with the coaches really well. I talk to Coach (Will) Friend a lot. I plan to make it up for the game against South Carolina."

Right now Smith has a pair of teammates committed to Alabama in quarterback Parker McLeod and ESPN 150 running back Tyren Jones, and one committed to Georgia in ESPN 300 offensive lineman Brandon Kublanow. It makes for plenty of entertainment for the Smith.

"It is fun to watch Brandon Kublanow talk to Tyren Jones after every game or practice," Smith said. "He is trying to get him to join him at Georgia. They tell me to just have fun and not worry about recruiting right now. It will all come to me."
