DE Joe Jones hoping for late rise

9/5/2012

Defensive end Joe Jones (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna) is hoping that a change will do him good. The 6-foot-3 senior said he's over 230 pounds now and that making a school switch from Miami Champagnat Catholic to Chaminade-Madonna has already paid off.

"It's a better situation for me to develop as a player," Jones said. "Better facilities and better coaching here at Chaminade."

Jones is only in his second year of organized sports. He admits that he was a bit chubby growing up, so he played in the band. However, football has proved to be something that fits Jones, as he had a sack and eight tackles in Chaminade's opener against Coral Springs (Fla.) Taravella.

He hit the camp circuit a little over the summer, participating in prospect camps at Miami, Florida International and Florida Atlantic. He was invited to Florida State's camp but could not find a way to get to Tallahassee.

Still Jones' work at camps have convinced several schools to give him a look and wait to see how he starts his senior season.

"I've hearing from Texas Tech, Florida Atlantic, Florida State has inquired recently, Utah State and Miami," Jones said. "They are all waiting for some game film. I think three or four games. They want to evaluate me closely and see what I've got to offer."

Jones would love to stay in state but he'll settle for what comes and try to take advantage of it.

"Three years ago playing football at any level didn't really cross my mind," Jones said. "Now we're talking about playing in college so it's all exciting."
