Opara talks about Maryland commitment

7/21/2012

Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin defensive tackle Kingsley Opara committed to Maryland on Friday, choosing the Terrapins over West Virginia.

The three-star prospect is the 18th commitment for Maryland and first from the state of Florida.

"It was a tough choice between Maryland and West Virginia because I really liked both programs," Opara said. "Once I sat and talked with my parents it seemed like the decision was clear."

Opara admits he'll probably still take an official to West Virginia but at the end of the day his relation with the Terrapins coaching staff proved to be the deciding factor.

"Coach [Randy] Edsall always made me a priority and he let me know that the program really needed me," Opara said. "I see where Maryland is heading and I think they are going to be a fast-rising program in the ACC."

Opara recorded double-digit sacks as junior and received offers from schools such as Wake Forest, UConn and Western Kentucky.
