Peter Kalambayi had to pause and think when asked to list his scholarship offers.
“Um, I'm going to try,” the 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker from Matthews (N.C.) Butler said. “Clemson, Michigan, NC State, Virginia Tech, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Florida (and) Stanford. I think that's it.”
Not bad for a junior.
Kalambayi is far from listing leaders among his list of potential suitors but he's certainly intrigued by some schools.
He knows as much or more about Clemson than any other school. He's visited the school three times.
“I like the environment down there,” he said. “It's good football. They do a lot to support their players academically. I like it there.”
Kalambayi has also visited Duke, Georgia, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech.
His most recent offers are from Stanford and Arkansas.
“I'd like to find out more about them,” Kalambayi said of the Razorbacks. “They're a good football team. I'm interested in them.”
Stanford has also piqued Kalambayi's interest. He said he has no reservations about traveling far from home for college. Stanford certainly seems like a good fit for Kalambayi, who has a 4.3 grade point average.
“It's a great mix of academics and football,” he said. “It's a great school.”
For Kalambayi to go west, however, he'll have to turn down his favorite team: the Florida Gators.
“I'm really familiar with their linebackers coach,” Kalambayi said, referring to D.J. Durkin. “I've liked Florida since I was young. I'm going to take a visit down there whenever I can.”
Kalambayi suffered a sprained ankle last week and won't play in Butler's playoff game on Friday evening. He's expected back next week. The injury, however, won't hamper Kalambayi's recruitment as he is undoubtedly one of the top prospects in North Carolina.
“He's one of the few kids I've ever met that's GPA and 40-time is the same,” Butler coach Brian Hales said.
