South Florida Express Elite, a 7-on-7 all-star team full of top talent from Broward and Dade County, won the IMG Madden 7-on-7 Southeast regional tournament in March by defeating Team Tampa in the finals. Both teams qualified for the national tournament that will be held in Bradenton at the end of June.
However, the teams are hoping to hook up in a scrimmage sometime in the next month at a location that is yet to be determined.
The directors of both programs have been in contact and would like to have a special one-day event next month at a neutral site.
The director of the South Florida Express team, Brett Goetz said the Express will be adding ESPN 150 prospects Artie Burns (Miami, Fla./Northwestern) and Jordan Cunningham (Davie, Fla./University School) over the summer now that their track obligations are over.
"It would be a fun day because these are two, great competitive teams that are loaded with BCS-quality prospects," Goetz said. "We might do a best-of-five or something just to settle the score."
Goetz said the plan would be to play into the early afternoon and have a joint team dinner in the evening.
"It's going to be competitive but respectful because these guys are all top players and many of them will be teammates at the next level," Goetz said. "So having the opportunity for the guys to meet and exchange information and become friends is important.
"I'm sure we'll all be rooting each other on by the time the national tournament comes about."
Goetz said the event could include two more teams.
