Memphis (Tenn.) Ridgeway is 6-3 this season and loaded with talent.
Its only two-way starter is Memphis three-star commit Sheldon Dawson.Dawson does a little of everything for Ridgeway, playing cornerback, free-safety, wide receiver and running back.
“Sheldon has ability to make money on Sundays at cornerback,” said Durron Sutton, Ridgeway’s coach. “He likes offense and likes the ball but that’s hard to tell a kid. He’s just a natural fit at cornerback. The kid just makes plays on both sides of the ball.”
Dawson has committed to the Tigers but will look around, according to Sutton.
“Sheldon has offers from every SEC school but LSU and Florida,” Sutton said. “I think he’s going to have to take his visits because things are not looking great at Memphis. I think he will set up visits to Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Memphis. I think he’s last visit will go to Auburn or Alabama.”
Another Ridgeway player who's committed but looking around is three-star running back Jaylen Walton. He pledged to Ole Miss some time ago but is still weighing his options.
“I told Jaylen the same thing,” Sutton said. “He needs to open things up. Teams like Mississippi State, Kentucky, Vandy, Cincinnati and USF are all on him. This kid is a real good scat back. He can run downhill but I don’t know if his size (5-9, 170 pounds) translates well at the next level. He can play in the slot and help out in the return game. Jaylen is very fast and was a Memphis Mr. Football finalists last year.”
“Cordale is having real good year,” Sutton said. “He can run block and pass pro real well. He’s physical and can move for someone 6-3 and 300 pounds. He has a lot of upside to him.
“Brandon has a chance to really be something special. He’s 6-5 and 230 and his upside is the greatest thing. He’s always played basketball and never reached his potential in the weight room. Once he concludes basketball he will really pick it up. Arkansas will get him up there, redshirt him and bulk him up.”
Quarterback Jamil Golden, 6-4 and 215 pounds, has scholarship offers from Vandy and Middle Tennessee State. Arkansas and Purdue are recruiting him, but have not offered at this point.
“He’s doing a good job of managing the game,” Sutton said. “He doesn’t have as many yards because we running effectively this season. So he has not had as many opportunities. But I have seen a lot of improvement. He’s gotten bigger, stronger and has learned game. He has pocket awareness and is not hanging onto to ball.”
