Hugh Freeze and his Ole Miss program are off to an impressive start to the 2013 recruiting class. Last week, the Rebels picked up a pair of commitments including Mario Mathis (Thomasville, Ga.).
The three-star outside linebacker prospect committed to Ole Miss on Thursday.
“It was God’s calling for me,” Mathis said. “Ole Miss felt like the best place for me. Everything was perfect and when I visited. It was exactly what I expected. Ole Miss felt like home to me. Everybody there is so positive. There is nothing negative and everyone seems to be great friends. Those coaches treat the players unbelievably well. All the coaches are great guys.”
Mathis, 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, plays strong side linebacker. He missed his first three games last season because of a knee injury. In fact, he played with a bad knee all season and still racked up 80 tackles and a dozen sacks.
“I basically didn’t have an ACL at all last year,” Mathis said. “It’s [surgery] been about four months and things are going great. I have been jogging for three weeks and should be back in late June. I am ready for a big season.”
Mathis also currently holds scholarship offers from Mississippi State, USF and South Alabama. He visited all four schools before deciding on the Rebels.
“I visited all of them and didn’t find anything like Ole Miss,” Mathis said. “It’s where I need to be.”
And once Mathis gets there he’s hoping he’s completely healed and healthy. If so, Mathis knows the Rebels are getting a dynamic linebacker prospect.
“I just go get the ball,” Mathis said. “I can pass rush and can cover out there. I will do whatever they ask.”
