Cal travelled a long way to land their third commit for their 2013 recruiting class, as Norcross, Ga., star cornerback Shon Akins just pulled the trigger for the Bears.
“I just did [commit] a few minutes ago,” Akins said. “They are very excited. I went ahead and made my decision. I know I have not been out there. I was supposed to go on spring break but now I will over summer break.”
Cal was the first team to offer the 5-foot-9, 175 pound corner. In the end it came down to three teams.
“It came down to Cal, Wake Forest and UConn,” Akins said. “I have been talking with coach [Ashley] Ambrose for a while and he seems like a cool coach to play for. I know the weather there is great and so is the environment and education. I think I would get redshirted there and then have a great chance to play.”
While Akins knows he’s not the biggest defensive back in the world he’s confident the Bears are landing a player that they can count on for this position.
“Cal is getting an explosive corner,” Akins said. “I know I am a little smaller but I am quick. I have fluid hips and can jump. I play way bigger than I am. I am also physical and love to hit.”
