Even though speedy athlete Dejon Funderburk (Pensacola, Fla./Washington) received an offer from Alabama a couple of weeks ago, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound junior wants to remind all that South Florida gave him his first big offer.
And now he’s going to see the Bulls’ campus for the first time this weekend at their junior day event.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing the school and the city of Tampa,” Funderburk said. “I want to meet the coaches and really see what USF is all about.”
While Alabama is possibly looking at Funderburk as a wide receiver, South Florida is recruiting him as a cornerback.
“I would love to play on either side of the ball,” Funderburk added. “Cornerback is a great fit at USF because their corners have a lot of opportunities to play single-man coverage, which is something I’m real good at.”
Funderburk says that several other programs have been communicating with him as well.
“I’m talking to LSU, Florida, Florida State, Auburn, a lot of other programs are talking right now,” Funderburk said. “We’ll see what happens.”
Also heading to Tampa this weekend is Winter Garden (Fla.) West Orange outside linebacker Corey Vereen.
The 6-2, 225-pound junior also received his first BCS offer from South Florida and has since added Florida State, Minnesota, Purdue, Tennessee and UCF to the mix.
“I really want to know more about the academics and the facilities there,” Vereen said. “I really like South Florida and I know they are looking at me as a defensive end.”
Vereen will follow up his trip to Tampa with visits to Tennessee and Florida in the upcoming weeks.
Among the other players expected to attend Sunday’s event are Winter Park (Fla.) HS quarterback Asiantii Woulard, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas quarterback John O’ Korn, St. Petersburg (Fla.) Lakewood wide receiver Rodney Adams and Seffner (Fla.) Armwood athlete Alvin Bailey.
