Sheldon Rankins (Covington, Ga./Eastside) is the newest member of Charlie Strong’s 2012 recruiting class, and he’s not shy about the decision he made earlier today.
“I am the newest Louisville Cardinal,” Rankins said. “I have been quite found of them for a while, even before I made my official visit. And yes, the visit reassured me. Certainly Wake Forest made a strong push. But [Louisville coach] Clint Hurtt was down today and said I am their defensive end. I am the guy they want. I love the coaching staff, the players, the campus, and the city of Louisville. To me, it’s a home away from home.”
Rankins, 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, is also very fond of Strong, and he can’t wait to play for this defensive minded coach.
“How many guys can say they were the defensive coordinator for a national champion? He has a great defensive mind,” Rankins said. “He runs a great scheme and it’s one of the best in country. He played a lot of young guys and they are bringing in a lot of great recruits like [linebackers] Keith [Brown] and Nick [Dawson]. He’s getting more toys to play with.”
Rankins is part of another very good recruiting class sitting at No. 25 overall. Strong’s 2011 group was very good, finishing No. 22 in the national team rankings.
“The potential there is real special,” Rankins said. “Every player who is serious about their craft and is a competitor wants to play with the best. That’s what’s happening there with the guys he’s bringing in. Practice will be hard every day. You will have to come with your ‘A’ game. You have to have that attitude. People better watch out for Louisville for the next few years. We will be on the rise.”
Rankins is the nation’s No. 50 ranked defensive end and the No. 49 ranked recruit from the state of Georgia.
