Kanler Coker (Flowery Branch, N.C./Flowery Branch) became the first commitment for Larry Fedora at North Carolina. Coker made his decision yesterday, after previously being committed to East Carolina.
“Kanler called me yesterday to give me the news,” said Lee Shaw, his former coach at Flowery Branch. “I left the school and have been out of the loop. But he’s kept me updated and he’s very excited. It’s a great fit for him and he’s the kind of guy that wants to be a part of that program. He felt in his gut that that was the best decision for him.”
Coker had a very good senior year, as they moved away from the ‘Wing-T’ and into the spread offense. It was an offense where this 6-foot-4, 205-pound signal caller thrived in. He rushed for over 800 yards and 15 scores and threw for over 2,800 yards and 31 touchdown passes.
“Kanler had a great senior year. It was truly remarkable,” Shaw said. “First, he’s a leader but he also has a great understanding of the game. And at 6-foot-4 he’s a legit dual threat guy who got better each game. This kid has great upside and he’s going to get really good. He understands the spread system, progressions, and he also understands the structure of the defense. I think he’s the kind of guy that can be the face of that program. Kanler is a better kid than a player and he’s outstanding player. I am super proud of him. He has earned the right to go to UNC.”
