Four-star athlete William Likely III (Belle Glade, Fla./Glades Central) committed to Maryland on Friday, choosing the Terrapins over LSU and Florida State.
The 5-foot-7, 175-pound Likely was being recruited as a defensive back and is the 19th verbal commitment in Maryland’s class and the third prospect rated at four-stars.
Last week, Likely welcome Maryland head coach Randy Edsall and defensive coordinator Brian Stewart on an in-home visit that likely put the Terps over the top.
“I really like the coaching staff, and I’m excited about the school’s move to the Big Ten,” Likely said. “The educational aspects of Maryland are really the key for me. The football part is great, and knowing I can make an early impact there is something I’m happy about, but Maryland has strong academics.”
Likely played running back, wide receiver and defensive back in his three years starting at Glades Central. He rushed for 769 yards and seven touchdowns while catching 31 passes for 427 yards. Likely should move to defense permanently at College Park.
“I can go out there and contribute at cornerback,” Likely said. “That’s my best position.”
Likely also took an official visit to Wake Forest in September and one to Maryland in November, he’s planned on a January enrollment.
