Nick Thomason is prepared to announce his college decision.
The 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker from Fulton (Miss.) Northeast Mississippi Community College is primarily considering Louisiana Tech, Troy and Arkansas State. He also has scholarship offers from Memphis, Alabama-Birmingham and Western Kentucky.
Thomason will sign with his chosen college on Wednesday, the first day junior college prospects can sign scholarship papers. Thomason said Troy and Louisiana Tech hold a slight lead over Arkansas State.
There are understandable concerns with Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech. Both schools underwent recent coaching changes. Thomason could wait to sign his scholarship papers in order to see what happens with coaches at the schools he is considering. However, he expressed concern that he may lose his scholarship if he waited. That presents a conundrum.
"I don't know if they're going to keep their defensive coaches," Thomason said. "I don't want to go somewhere where I know don't who my coach is going to be."
Troy makes a lot of sense for a couple of reasons. The school is little more than a three-hour drive from Thomason's hometown of Muscle Shoals, Ala. He also has five former high school teammates and a former junior college teammate that play at the school. When asked what he's looking for in a school, Thomason said, "Good program and good coaches with a good background."
Thomason registered 72 tackles in just six games last season. He missed three games with a knee injury that he later returned from.
