Tennessee commit takes Purdue official

11/26/2012

Three-star linebacker Dominic Zanca-McDonald (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lake Brantley) would love to stick with his commitment to Tennessee.

However the 6-foot-2, 245-pound senior decided to take an official to Purdue this past weekend as part of a contingency plan. When he left West Lafayette, Ind., on Sunday morning, he was told by head coach Danny Hope to expect an in-home visit next month.

By the time Zanca-McDonald arrived back in Orlando, Hope had been fired.

"I don’t think he had any idea it was happening," Zanca-McDonald said. "He was very upbeat in talking about what lied ahead for the program and he said he’d see me this month. I think he was blindsided by the whole thing."

Zanca-McDonald says he has no more official visits planned and is eagerly awaiting word on the next Tennessee head coach.

"My preference is to be a Vol," Zanca-McDonald added. "Purdue was a situation I was looking into in case things with Tennessee didn’t work out but I’m not too worried about it. Hopefully things will work out with Tennessee because that’s where I want to go."
