WR Barnes hearing from SEC programs

11/13/2012

Three-star wide receiver Johnell Barnes (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar) has been solidly committed to Duke since the summer, but that hasn’t stopped other programs from inquiring about him.

The 6-foot, 170-pound senior has been pursued heavily by Vanderbilt in recent weeks and also heard from another SEC program this past weekend.

“Vanderbilt has been pretty aggressive overall,” Barnes said. “And one of the coaches from Georgia, their DB coach (Scott Lakatos) came up and talked with me after the Immokalee game.”

But while Barnes appreciated the increased interest from other programs, he appears solid with the Blue Devils.

“I am just happy with Duke and I’m happy with my relationship with the players and coaches in the program,” Barnes added. “At Duke they are doing things the right way and moving in the right direction.

“The academic situation is the best around, so it’s not just a football decision for me but a life decision. You never want to close any door, but a lot of things are going to have to happen for me to consider another program.”

Barnes would rather focus on Dunbar’s playoff run, which begins Friday against Orlando (Fla.) Jones.

“I’m excited about this team and the opportunity we have,” Barnes said. “We’re still getting better and starting to understand how good we can be if everyone works together.”

Barnes said that he will not enroll at Duke in January because he wants to play basketball for Dunbar.
