On The Trail: Max Redfield
Notre Dame looks to make an impact in California every year in recruiting. In the 2013 class, the Fighting Irish were extremely successful, pulling the nation's No. 2 athlete and No. 1 defensive tackle out of the Golden State in Max Redfield and Eddie Vanderdoes.
Notre Dame is again very active on the West Coast in the 2014 class, as offers have gone out to some of California's top players, including running back Joe Mixon (Oakley, Calif./Freedom), cornerback Adoree' Jackson (Gardena, Calif./Serra) and John Smith (Long Beach, Calif./Poly).

After weeks of speculation involving USC, Louisville and Kentucky, ESPN 300 defensive end Jason Hatcher has made up his mind heading into signing day.

In a topsy-turvy recruiting season that has had Trojans fans teetering on the brink of insanity with the decommitments of one-time USC verbals Eddie Vanderdoes, Max Redfield, Eldridge Massington, Sebastian LaRue and Kylie Fitts -- not to mention the uncertain status of others such as Jalen Ramsey and Torrodney Prevot -- it’s worth taking a quick look back to signing day 2011. While the saga of the Class of 2013 has been filled with plenty of drama, nothing compares to the way Lane Kiffin and his staff were rocked by the last-second defection of De’Anthony Thomas.

If ESPN 150 athlete Max Redfield (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) plays defense for the Fighting Irish, he will be a significant upgrade in athleticism, speed and talent over what they have now. Conversely, especially considering what we saw with USC's Marqise Lee two years ago, having played safety in the Under Armour game, Redfield could just as easily be an offensive weapon at wide receiver for Notre Dame. Regardless, the Irish just got better with the additions of Redfield and fellow Under Armour All-American Tarean Folston (Cocoa, Fla./Cocoa) this week.

Long overdue for positive news, the USC Trojans finally got some Friday in the form of a commitment from highly coveted safety Leon McQuay III (Seffner, Fla./Armwood), live during the Under Armour All-America Game in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Quite frankly, USC needed this one.
Following a recent rough stretch -- both in recruiting and on the field -- the addition of McQuay to a dwindling class is both significant and encouraging. If the Trojans plan to regain the momentum they built in the summer, securing a pledge from the nation's No. 3 safety is a good start.

If Notre Dame lands the No. 1 class in 2013, the Fighting Irish might be thanking Max Redfield. It’s not only because of the immense talent Redfield brings -- though it helps -- but because he might have started a slew of decommitments that will end up in the Irish’s favor.
Redfield officially visited Notre Dame the weekend of Oct. 12 and decommitted from USC shortly thereafter. He was then a major Irish lean for quite some time. California is a major recruiting ground for the Irish, and like Redfield, several ESPN 150 prospects from the state were still hearing from the Irish despite being committed to USC.
Two of those prospects were Sebastian LaRue and Eddie Vanderdoes, and both recently decommitted from the Trojans. Each will take an official visit to Notre Dame now, and the Irish are in a strong position to land both. Redfield can be looked at as the prospect who started it all.
Athletically, Redfield brings two-way talent and can play either receiver or defensive back when he gets to South Bend. The defensive backfield is an area the Irish needed to address in the 2013 class, and he can play safety in South Bend.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Notre Dame’s push continues for the No. 1 spot in the ESPN recruiting class rankings.
The Irish added a pledge tonight during the Under Armour All-America Game from Max Redfield of Mission Viejo, Calif., the nation’s No. 4 athlete and No. 36 prospect in the ESPN 150. Redfield again spurned Notre Dame rival USC, from which he decommitted in November, though he continued to consider the Trojans.
Notre Dame appeared in the lead for Redfield after he bolted from the Trojans. He spoke glowingly of the Irish after an October official visit to South Bend, Ind., to watch the Irish defeat Stanford in overtime.
His commitment is the 23rd for Notre Dame, which counts 10 members of the ESPN 150 in its Class of 2013. Redfield, the No. 3 prospect in California, ranks behind linebacker Jaylon Smith of Fort Wayne, Ind., and running back Greg Bryant of Delray Beach, Fla., on the Notre Dame list.
The Irish, after a 12-0 regular season that landed them in the BCS title game against Alabama at 8 p.m. ET Monday on ESPN, have gained momentum in recruiting. Bryant, No. 2 nationally at running back and 27th overall in the ESPN 150, joined the class in December. Tarean Folston, the nation’s No. 9 athlete from Cocoa, Fla., committed this week during practice sessions for the UA Game to vault Notre Dame to No. 2 in the class rankings, behind Alabama.
The 6-foot-2, 181-pound Redfield, who started in Friday's UA game and is projected to play safety in college, also had visited Washington and recently considered Ohio State.
The recruiting score is extra sweet for Notre Dame as it continues to watch the Trojans suffer. Redfield made an official visit to USC, which finished 7-6 this season with three straight losses -- including a 22-13 defeat in Los Angeles to Notre Dame on Nov. 24. He also gave his final home visit to USC coaches about three weeks ago, but it wasn’t enough to swing him back.
The Trojans have also endured the losses of WR commits Sebastian LaRue and Eldridge Massington and defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes, sending USC from the top spot to No. 5 in the class rankings.
Meanwile, Notre Dame pushes forward. A win Monday over Alabama would only further aid the Irish’s quest to surpass the Crimson Tide.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- And then there were five.
Under Armour All-America Game officials have confirmed that Pomfret (Md.) McDonough four-star offensive tackle Na'Ty Rodgers will not announce his decision tonight’s game. Kickoff for the sixth annual game is at 5 p.m. ET and is broadcast on ESPN.
Rodgers tweeted late last night that he wasn’t going to announce his decision and likely would wait until signing day.
“I've decided to not announce tomorrow,” the tweet said. “Sorry folks.”
Rodgers was expected to decide between Maryland and South Carolina at the game, but now he’s going to wait. Oklahoma and Washington have also been in contention with Rodgers, who ranks as the nation’s No. 27 offensive tackle and the No. 9 player in Maryland.
Still scheduled to announce are four-star safety Leon McQuay III, four-star defensive end Ebenezer Ogundeko, four-star athlete Max Redfield, four-star linebacker Trey Johnson and four-star athlete Kendell Beckwith.
McQuay is expected to pick between Florida State and USC. Ogundeko lists Syracuse and Clemson as the favorites.
Redfield listed Notre Dame, Ohio State and USC as his finalists, but the Buckeyes aren't actively recruiting him and he should pick between the Irish and Trojans.
Beckwith will decide between LSU and Alabama. Johnson will choose from Ohio State, Tennessee and Florida, but the final pick will be between the Buckeyes and Vols.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The verdict is in for Max Redfield. We’ll learn his decision on Friday on ESPN's 5 p.m. ET telecast of the Under Armour All-America Game.
Redfield, a four-star safety from Mission Viejo, Calif., said Sunday he’s comfortable with his choice. The finalists include USC, to which he was a longtime commitment before reneging in October, Notre Dame and a dark horse -- Ohio State.
Rated 36th in the ESPN 150 and No. 4 at his position, Redfield said it was “crucial” to reconsider his initial choice.
