The Big Ten had an important weekend on the field, and there was some big news off the field as well. Here is a look at what took place on the recruiting trail within the conference.

Biggest commitment:

Tom VanHaaren: Minnesota landed two commitments this past week with 2014 linebacker Everett Williams (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield Legacy) and 6-foot-5, 245-pound tight end Brandon Lingen (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata). Those were big commits for the Gophers for a few reasons. Before landing those two, Minnesota only had six commitments for the 2014 class so adding these two helps boost the class. Williams is a three-star, and Lingen is a local kid who jumped on an offer almost immediately.

The latest stop on the New Level Nation 7-on-7 tour is Youngstown on Saturday, as some of the top teams and prospects from the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic head to northeast Ohio. The organization’s 7-on-7 tournaments are steadily growing every year and are now one of the premier competitions in the country, but the 7-on-7 at Youngstown State will unfortunately be missing some of the Midwest’s best -- through no fault of its own.

PSU eyeing 2014 Detroit trio

Avonte Maddox smiled as he sat down to a cafeteria lunch of chicken, cookies and a carton of kiwi-strawberry juice on Tuesday. The 2014 athlete never had a chance to finish it.

His baseball coach strolled up to his lunch table to tell him Penn State assistant Ron Vanderlinden was sitting inside his office there at Detroit (Mich.) Martin Luther King. Maddox shot the coach a confused look, slowly rising because he wasn't sure whether it was a joke.

It wasn't.
