SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Carolinas consistently have proved to be one of the top areas in the nation to find gridiron talent. These two states in recent years have produced players like current Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green, South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney, the No. 1 overall player in the 2011 class, and Georgia RB Todd Gurley. For the 2014 class, 22 players from these two states are represented in the ESPN 300, and several of them are taking part in the annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas here this week.

ACC recruiting reporters Corey Dowlar and Jared Shanker answer your questions in their weekly mailbag. You can send questions to them on Twitter with the #AskACC hashtag and mention @cdowlar and @JShankerESPN. Or reach them via email at cdowlar@gmail.com and JShankerESPN@gmail.com.

This week's mailbag covers questions on whether Clemson can sustain its on-field success, how Jameis Winston can help FSU down the line, and will Virginia Tech add another four-star defensive tackle among a few other questions.

@retaildropout asks: Is Clemson recruiting well enough to keep them at this elite level? Can they reload, or is this "their year?"

The most important commitment in a team's recruiting class is a purely subjective. Is it the best overall recruit or the commit who fills the biggest need? Is it the lineman that has helped recruit other big-time prospects? And in six months, let alone a year or two, will they still even be on the team?

ACC reporters Corey Dowlar and Jared Shanker take these factors into effect and come up with the most important 2014 commitments for every ACC program.

McClendon heading to the ACC

Jalan McClendon (Charlotte, N.C./West Mecklenburg) has reached a decision.

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound pocket passer, who had offers from East Carolina, Florida State, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina and Wake Forest, has committed to North Carolina State, he confirmed Wednesday night.

The chance to play early, among other things, was a big factor in McClendon's choice.

"It's the best place for me and the best opportunity," he said. "The coaches like me and I talked with the man above about it."

McClendon was last on campus in Raleigh over the weekend, and that visit was a major boost for the Wolfpack's recruiting efforts toward him.

Florida State already has a quarterback on board for 2014, and even one for 2015, but that's not going to stop them from hosting another one on an unofficial visit this weekend.

Jalan McClendon (Charlotte, N.C./ West Mecklenburg), a 6-foot-4 pocket passer, is headed down to Tallahassee to see how Florida State operates.

Ohio State-Michigan comes a bit early

The calendar says Michigan will travel to Ohio State on Nov. 24, but a small scale version will play out Friday in Hudson, Ohio. That’s where Elyria (6-2) will take on the Explorers (7-1) in an important Division I, Region 2 meeting.

Hudson controls its postseason destiny, while a win by the Pioneers would push the squad higher in the playoff picture. Ohio State commit and defensive tackle Tracy Sprinkle calls it the biggest game of his career with Elyria. Michigan commit and inside linebacker Ben Gedeon says a win will catapult Hudson toward an even bigger showdown with North Royalton (8-0) in Week 10.

“I’ve wanted to lead this team to the playoffs since I started playing here,” Sprinkle said. “That’s my main goal. Every year, we want to go to the playoffs.

QB Jalan McClendon likes spread offense

Jalan McClendon sees a lot of similarities in the two schools that have offered him a scholarship, North Carolina and Wake Forest.

"They both run a spread offense," the junior quarterback from Charlotte (N.C.) West Mecklenburg said. "They both have a good education. They both have my major [broadcasting]. … They're both good football programs."

Both schools also see the same attributes in McClendon. When asked what coaches from both staffs have told him about his play, McClendon said, "I think it's my arm, my accuracy and my footwork."
