NCF On The Trail: Gunner Kiel

The One Who Got Away: Gunner Kiel

January, 31, 2013
BATON ROUGE -- LSU is a big enough player in the recruiting game that it receives its share of big-name decommitments.

But you'll be hard pressed to find one who has affected a program's fan culture like Gunner Kiel.

You might know Kiel as a backup quarterback at Notre Dame, but, a little more than a year ago, he was one of the nation's top prep quarterbacks and he was committed to LSU.

According to a release issued by the school's official site, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly has announced the addition of four players to the team's roster. Included on the list is ESPNU 150 quarterback Gunner Kiel (Columbus, Ind./East), who was publically committed to LSU.

This figures to end the unusual recruitment of Kiel. The four-star prospect originally committed to Indiana in July over Alabama and Oklahoma among others. Kiel then announced he was "re-evaluating" his decision in October. Last month, he committed to LSU over Notre Dame and Vanderbilt and was slated to enroll for the spring semester at Baton Rouge, La. Kiel did not publically announce his switch from LSU to Notre Dame prior to arriving in South Bend.

Three other players, cornerback Tee Shepard (Fresno, Calif./Washington Union), defensive lineman Sheldon Day (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) and running back Amir Carlise (Santa Clara, Calif./USC), have enrolled early.

Scouts: Kiel finds a good fit with LSU

December, 28, 2011
Gunner Kiel (Columbus, Ind./East) may have made the right choice from a coaching standpoint alone as LSU offensive coordinator Steve Kragthorpe will do a very nice job with the powerful passer from Indiana. The depth chart has a been a big part of the equation for Kiel during the process and with Jarrett Lee departing and Jefferson as an upperclassman as well, Kiel can come in, redshirt and compete fairly quickly with a terrific supporting cast around him to give him the best opportunity for success.
