NCF On The Trail: Christian McCaffrey

Though the season ended on a sour note, with a 24-20 loss to Michigan State in the Rose Bowl presented by VIZIO, 2013 was another tremendously successful season for the Cardinal. Stanford posted an 11-win season and defended its Pac-12 crown. Heading toward signing day, it's doubtful this loss will damage any of the momentum the Cardinal have built on the recruiting trail. On the heels of a small recruiting class in 2013 -- Stanford signed just a dozen prospects -- Shaw and his assistants will be able to go after more recruits in the 2014 class, though this group still likely won't approach the maximum allowable limit of 25. At this point, Stanford's 2014 class ranks No. 28 in the nation and No. 4 in the Pac-12.

One thing is becoming abundantly clear in the Urban Meyer era.

The two-time national champion coach likes players with NFL bloodlines. In the Class of 2014, Ohio State has offered Christian McCaffrey the son of three-time Super Bowl winner Ed McCaffrey. Jonathan Haden, the brother of NFL superstar Joe Haden, and Austin Roberts, the son of Super Bowl champion Alfredo Roberts.

Tennessee offensive line commit Orlando Brown Jr., the son of late Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Orlando Brown, was also offered by the Buckeyes as was linebacker Dillon Bates, the son of three-time Super Bowl winner Bill Bates.

Ohio State headed out West for its latest offer and it came with a very familiar sounding name.

Athlete Christian McCaffrey (Highland Ranch, Colo./Valor Christian) was offered and if the name rings a bell, it should. His father Ed was a three-time Super Bowl champion and former Pro Bowl selection.

Christian is no slouch himself. He has been labeled Colorado’s top recruit in the Class of 2014 by the Denver Post after an incredible junior season.

Michigan has been extending offers out to 2014 prospects little by little as we move closer to the high school off season.

The latest to receive good news is an athlete out of Colorado, who has been hearing from Michigan for quite some time now.

Texas traditionally holds a large place in the initial ESPN player rankings, and the 2014 class proves to be no different. Of the athletes represented on the ESPN Watch List, 39 are from the Lone Star State.

With the name and the bloodline, 2014 Christian McCaffrey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor Christian) is expected to be a big-time athlete.

His father is former NFL star Ed McCaffrey, an All-American receiver at Stanford before going on to win a Super Bowl championship with the San Francisco 49ers and two more with the Denver Broncos. His older brother is Max McCaffrey, a receiver who signed with Duke in February. His uncle, Billy McCaffrey was a star college basketball player at Vanderbilt before going on to play professionally overseas.

When your name is McCaffrey, there’s pressure, but for Christian, it’s clear that with pressure, you either sink or swim. He has chosen to swim, and he’s now one of the rising 2014s in the national recruiting ranks.
