The top receiver for the best quarterback to ever come out of Mentor, Ohio, had choices on where he wanted to continue his college career.

But when it came down to it, Brandon Fritts followed one of his best friends south and committed to North Carolina on Monday.

One look into the “Twittersphere” Saturday night came back with a resounding answer regarding Mentor (Ohio) quarterback Mitch Trubisky: It looks like North Carolina picked up a steal when the ESPN 150 senior committed to the Tar Heels.

What Trubisky has done this season is incredible, but what he’s done in the last two games is what sets him apart in the eyes of many opposing coaches. In back-to-back victories over Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward and Cleveland St. Ignatius -- the last two big-school state champions in Ohio -- Trubisky has rewritten more than a few record books.

Brandon Fritts exploding onto scene

Ohio State assistant Tom Herman might be giving Mentor (Ohio) football coach Steve Trivisonno a call this week to ask for a little more game film.

The Buckeyes coach in charge of recruiting the Cardinals has interest in Brandon Fritts, but what the junior wide receiver has done the last two weeks in knocking out the last two Division I state champions has to have just about every coach foaming at the mouth.

“He’s been exploding,” Mentor quarterback and North Carolina commit Mitch Trubisky said. “Brandon just runs great routes. He’s a great player. I know when he gets open, it’s my job to get him the ball.”

When you’re catching passes from a quarterback that just broke the school record once held by a former Mr. Football winner, you’re bound to get a few looks.

The Plain Dealer/LandovMitch Trubisky has two talented targets in Brandon Fritts and Connor Krizancic.
But when you’re as good as Brandon Fritts (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and teammate Conner Krizancic, it doesn’t matter if the passes are coming from North Carolina commit Mitch Trubisky or Mitch Albom.

Fritts, who has Boston College, Duke, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh and West Virginia interested, knows how the recruiting industry works. Of course, his 20 catches, team-leading 355 yards and five touchdowns through six games this season is proof positive the junior is going to catch on at the next level, especially at 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds.

Ohio State is on the road, but that doesn’t mean the Buckeyes don’t have a chance to impress this weekend.

Inside linebacker Clifton Garrett (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) is planning an unofficial trip to East Lansing, Mich. to see the Buckeyes play Michigan State on Saturday.

Garrett confirmed his trip Wednesday and is very much on the radar of Ohio State.

Notre Dame had its biggest recruiting weekend of the season over the last few days, and RecruitingNation was there to cover it all. The team caught up with several 2013 and 2014 recruits and got the story from each on how the visit to Notre Dame went.

Here is a one-stop place for all the news to come out of South Bend this weekend:

Brandon Fritts (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and his teammate Kent Berger don’t want to dream just yet, but there is a gleam.

Both juniors for the Cardinals, each has interest from Ohio State as they head into the mid-portion of the season, and it is interest the wide receiver and defensive end don’t take lightly.

“You grow up a Buckeyes fan,” said Fritts, who made 48 catches for 790 yards as a sophomore. “I’ve always watched them every Saturday. To see them have interest in you is like, ‘Wow.’ You can’t believe it.
