Weekend recruiting wrap: Big 12

Tis the season for state-title games and all-star games for many of the nation’s top recruits. Several Big 12 targets were on notice over the weekend, whether it involved playing for a state football ring or state bragging rights.

Two headlining events over the weekend were the Texas high school state championships in Arlington, Texas, and the annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas in Spartanburg, S.C. Here are some weekend highlights from both events in addition to news about an ESPN 300 running back and a three-star athlete considered to be a two-sport standout.

As the Christmas holiday nears, recruiting has slowed some. But not entirely as both Virginia schools extended offers.

Florida State and Virginia Tech landed commitments recently, too.

Biggest offer: 2015 defensive end Sterling Johnson (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) already has an impressive group of schools after him. Clemson, Florida and NC State have all offered. And just last week, another high-level ACC school jumped in, too -- Virginia Tech. The Hokies would love to add a 6-foot-5, 245-pound player off the edge for Bud Foster’s defense. The Hokies' in-state rival, Virginia, also issued an offer, but this one went to 2015 tight end Jackson Harris (Columbia, Tenn./Columbia Central). Other ACC schools in on Harris include Florida State, Georgia Tech, Clemson and Virginia Tech. Louisville, a future ACC school, has offered as well.

Weekend recruiting wrap: SEC

We are one week into the dead period that runs through Jan. 15. While the dead period limits contact, it doesn’t stop prospects from announcing decisions. As is always the case, recruiting doesn’t stop during Christmas vacation, and that was certainly the case last week.

Pac-12 weekend recruiting wrap

All eyes were on the California state bowl games this past weekend, as five contests pitted teams from Southern California against Northern California. And although recruiting took something of a backseat to the final games of the season, there was some noise made in the Pac-12 conference, including a quarterback shakeup that could continue to play out down the line.
