WeAreSC recruiting mailbag

Dustin Perlberg, via @dustinperlberg: Is USC even recruiting Demario Richard?
There had been some contact, mostly during the spring evaluation period, but no offer has been extended to the four-star running back. Richard’s comments on Twitter earlier this week about not considering the Trojans as long as Lane Kiffin is the coach were interesting given that USC has already missed on two of its other top targets, Royce Freeman (Imperial, Calif./Imperial) and Joe Mixon (Oakley, Calif./Freedom). He could be an option down the road, though that doesn't appear very likely now.
Running back is not a big priority in this class, but it might be alarming to hear a recruit publicly disclose his stance. That was the biggest takeaway.
Javier, via @socalfan55: USC needs to stop recruiting these Orange County quarterbacks and look for a running QB.
Part of the intrigue quarterback recruits feel with USC centers around the pro-style scheme. That obviously doesn’t mean the Trojans should stay away from dual-threat types, but the school has been very successful with pocket-passers before and the recent success of programs like Alabama and Stanford proves it can still work.
Jet, via @jethomme: Why would Tashon Smallwood decommit? Coach Kiffin has little to do with USC’s defense.
The decision wasn’t entirely Smallwood’s -- it just appeared that way since his decommitment became known following the loss to Washington State. Smallwood had been trying to contact the coaching staff for weeks, but was unsuccessful in those attempts. According to a source, the relationship grew a bit rocky once the four-star lineman named a list of top five schools despite being committed and a poor start to his senior season certainly didn't help matters.
