2015 OL Higby discusses new SEC offer
By Damon Sayles
Tyler Higby (Houston/Kinkaid) went to the LSU camp with one offer and the hope of receiving instruction from some of the best coaches in the country.
He never expected to pick up offer No. 2 -- and have that offer come from one of the big dogs of the SEC.
Higby, a rising 2015 offensive lineman, picked up an LSU offer while in Baton Rouge, La., and more importantly, he might have seen his popularity skyrocket with the help of one camp. As a 6-foot-4, 285-pound lineman, Higby can play both guard and tackle.
"It was amazing. Coach [Les] Miles pulled me out of a drill, and I thought he was going to give me some pointers about the 1-on-1 drills we were doing," Higby said. "But he talked to me about making sure I come to all the camps that LSU has and [said] I need to continue to work hard in school and on the field.
"Then he said, 'I'm offering you a scholarship. Just continue to be the same guy you are and work hard. I can't wait to coach you.' "
Higby entered the camp with a Texas State offer, which he picked up late last week. He played tackle most of the season for Kinkaid last year, but he has seen time at guard. Higby is expected to play tackle for the 2013 season.
Higby admitted to not knowing a lot about the LSU program, but he said he's definitely interested in learning more. He's looking into getting advice from offensive line coach Greg Studrawa on what the Tigers are looking for in a prototype, SEC offensive lineman.
"I don't know much about it in general, but I know a few people who have gone to LSU, and they all loved it," Higby said. "I know it's good academically. The football team is always tops in the country, and Les Miles is an amazing coach.
"To be offered by them is amazing, since they are one of the schools that I think of when someone says tops in the country."
Higby's camping will continue on Friday, as he will make the trek to Waco, Texas, for Baylor's camp. He also said he will attend a Houston camp later this summer. Along with LSU, Higby has attended a camp hosted by Texas Tech.
