"We talked as a family for two or three days and last night I realized that Clemson was where I wanted to go," Richard said. "So we thought why wait and put my spot in danger? I figured why wait if I knew I would not be okay not going to Clemson."
Richard chose the Tigers over several over offers, including South Carolina and Ole Miss. In the end, the 6-foot-3, 228-pound tight end felt it was the perfect fit for him.
"Clemson's offense is virtually identical to ours, so I feel like I can come right in and learn the verbiage and get in and compete immediately," Richard said. "That is where I want to play football. Those are the coaches I want to play for, that is the stadium I want to play in and those are the guys I want to be around. Clemson is where I want to play. It feels like a big relief to know we are 100 percent committed to each other."
Richard made the call to the Clemson head coach shortly before speaking to ESPN, and both parties acknowledged that they were done looking around.
"I spoke to Coach (Dabo) Swinney 10 minutes ago and he was ecstatic that I was 100 percent committed and that they are 100 percent committed to me," Richard said. "There will be no more trips. I am only taking one official visit -- to Clemson."
Now Richard can focus on his senior season, as well as helping Clemson pull in more top talent to play around him. He already has an elite quarterback to catch passes from. Clemson also has a shot at another top Peach State prospect in ESPN 150 wide receiver Demarre Kitt (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek)
"Me and Deshaun Watson are good friends and we knew a long time ago if we ended up together it would be because it was the best situation for both of us," Richard said. "It just happened to work out that we have both committed there. I am not into pressuring anyone else to commit, but I definitely plan to reach out to some guys. My advice to them is to only commit if they feel its the best fit for them."
Richard wanted to thank the other colleges that recruited him for the interest shown.
"I want to say to all of the other schools that recruited me, I am very blessed for the offers and that they felt I could come in and play in their system," Richard said. "All of them are top-notch schools and I am really thankful for that."
