Two in front for ATH Verkedric Vaughns
By Damon Sayles
Verkedric Vaughns (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet) has watched his stock rise in the past six weeks, and the versatile, 5-foot-9, 176-pound athlete said he’s looking at two programs as potential spots to play at the next level.
Vaughns said Baylor and Texas Tech are in the lead, and while neither school has offered, Vaughns feel comfortable both will offer very soon.
Vaughns, who has offers from Northwestern and Northern Illinois, visited Baylor during the program’s spring game. He was set to visit Texas Tech on Friday but had to reschedule at the last minute. What his decision could come down to is which team shows the most interest -- that, and possibly which team offers first.
“I like them both. Baylor has a real nice atmosphere,” Vaughns said. “I talked with my parents, and they really don’t want me leaving the state. Baylor seems like a nice place, and everybody is real positive. I went and watched them, and their corners are nice. They were locking down the field.
“Tech’s got a new coaching staff. They’re young, and they get everybody going. I really like that about them. I think everybody wants to be in an environment like that.”
Vaughns is being recruited to Baylor by secondary coach Carlton Buckels and safeties coach Brian Norwood. He’s being recruited to Texas Tech by cornerbacks coach Kevin Curtis and safeties coach/special teams coordinator Trey Haverty.
Vaughns played all over the field for Poteet, but he was named a second-team all-district selection as a wide receiver at the end of the 2012 season. He caught 31 passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns, and he also rushed 23 times for 179 yards
During the spring, however, Vaughns has been showing his worth on defense. He’s shined at camps in cover situations playing cornerback. Vaughns also said he can play safety if necessary.
