Ohio State practice floors Watch List DE
By Brad Bournival
Ohio State is nothing new to ESPN Watch List defensive end Verondtae Wilkinson (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison), but the Buckeyes certainly opened his eyes on Thursday.
In town for an unofficial visit, Wilkinson thought he knew the ins and outs of Ohio State. His former teammate Cam Burrows is now a cornerback for the Buckeyes, so it should have been the same old same old right?
Wilkinson was in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and took in a practice. That’s when he was wowed.
“It was real nice,” Wilkinson said. “To be honest, it was something I needed to see. They get stuff done at Ohio State. I was surprised at how quick the practice is.”
As if that wasn’t motivation enough, the Buckeyes told him the interest is still very much there for the 6-foot-3, 235-pound Wilkinson, who logged 80 tackles, six sacks, three fumble recoveries and an interception last season.
He currently holds offers from Buffalo, Illinois, Ohio University and has interest from the Buckeyes, Bowling Green, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan.
The Ohio State offer is one the junior covets tremendously.
“They told me to keep working hard and it will probably come,” Wilkinson said. “That will push me tremendously. It’ll put me on another level almost. I’ve been going there for a long time, but today it looked even better to me.”
Should Wilkinson get the offer and choose the Buckeyes, he would bolster a defensive unit that is strong already. The Class of 2013 featured an ESPN 150 defensive tackle in Joey Bosa (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and three other ESPN 300 defensive linemen in Michael Hill (Pendleton, S.C./Pendleton), Billy Price (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and Donovan Munger (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights).
