Touted Ohio QB pledges to Spartans
By Jared Shanker
Michigan State was close to landing an Ohio quarterback a few weeks ago, but instead another Buckeye State signal-caller has committed to the Spartans.
Chris Durkin (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) committed to Michigan State on Thursday night, according to his father, Christopher.
"Chris is a Spartan!" his father wrote in an email.
The 6-foot-4, 234-pound quarterback also had offers from BCS programs Illinois, Indiana and Northwestern. Durkin was scheduled to visit Northwestern next week, but the Wildcats recently landed ESPN Watch List quarterback Clayton Thorson.
Michigan State was among the finalists recently for QB DeShone Kizer (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic), but when LSU and Alabama offered, Kizer postponed his decision.
