Noles offer sparks Ragnow's recruitment
By Jared Shanker
When the Seminoles offer a scholarship to a prospect from Minnesota, programs across the country are bound to take notice. So now offensive tackle Frank Ragnow (Victoria, Minn./Chanhassen) is on every program’s radar, especially in the Midwest.
“Ohio State, I am talking to a lot. Nebraska, Michigan State, Iowa State and Wisconsin are the teams showing the most interest,” Ragnow said.
Ragnow has a series of visits lined up beginning with this weekend. He will check out Northwestern, Notre Dame and Western Michigan in the next few days. On the docket next weekend is Iowa State’s junior day, and he will be at spring games at Nebraska and then Wisconsin during the first two weekends of April.
Of the teams yet to offer, the Cornhuskers are on Ragnow the hardest. He keeps in close contact with Nebraska offensive line coaches Barney Cotton and John Garrison.
“I talk to their coaches on a daily basis,” Ragnow said. “Coach Cotton and Coach Garrison said they are really impressed by my film and can’t wait to get me on campus and meet Coach Bo [Pelini].”
The 6-foot-6, 281-pound lineman was offered by Florida State earlier this month. Seminoles offensive line coach Rick Trickett told Ragnow to give him a call early in the morning, so Ragnow called right away. Trickett said his film jumped off the screen and wanted to offer right away.
In awe, Ragnow hardly knew what to say. He has since found the words and keeps in close contact with Trickett and is doing his due diligence on Florida State.
“I heard their stadium and history is cool, and they got a great coaching staff,” Ragnow said. “I really liked [Trickett]. He was really straight up with me. I think they want me to get on the phone with [Jimbo Fisher] next week.”
Distance will not be a major factor for Ragnow, but he admits it could play a role in his decision. Minnesota offered last summer after Ragnow impressed at the Golden Gophers’ camp. Being the in-state school gives the Gophers a slight advantage “because it’d make my family happier,” Ragnow said.
But location is not the program’s only perk, Ragnow said.
“I really like the coaching staff, like Coach [Jerry] Kill and developed a big relationship with Coach [Matt] Limegrover,” he said. “I like how it’s close to home and it seems like they’re going in the right direction.”
There is not any rush to make a commitment on Ragnow’s part as he plans to enjoy the process until he finds the right school.
