2014 WR earns Tide offer during visit
By Greg Ostendorf
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Junior wide receiver Jesse Jackson (Petal, Miss./Petal) visited the University of Alabama over the weekend, but he didn’t think he would have the opportunity to sit down and talk with head coach Nick Saban.
Not only did Jackson talk with Saban, he received a scholarship offer from the Crimson Tide.
“[Saban] said, ‘I want you to know that you have an offer from Alabama if you decide to come play football here,’ Jackson said. “I was really shocked. I didn’t see it coming.
“He gave us a list of rules and things like that. He just said it was going to be hard because ‘I challenge our kids in a way most schools don’t.’ ”
Some kids might shy away from that challenge, but not Jackson. He’s looking forward to it.
“That’s why I love the SEC,” he said. “I think every week it’s a challenge. I think that’s what it takes to make it to the next level, and that’s what I want.”
On his visit, Jackson measured in at 6-foot-1 1/2 and 200 pounds. He started out as a wide receiver, but he now plays both ways in high school. According to Jackson, Saban said he likes the Magnolia State prospect at either position.
“He said that I’m real physical and that’s what he sees on film,” Jackson said. “That’s what he really likes about me.”
Because of his versatility, Jackson met with both Billy Napier, the wide receivers coach, and Greg Brown, the defensive backs coach. Both Napier and Brown are new to the Alabama coaching staff this year.
“I talked to the wide receivers coach, the defensive backs coach, and I got a little bit from them,” Jackson said. “I’m going back up this summer. They’re going to evaluate me and see what position that I fit in at Alabama.”
Jackson also has early offers from Mississippi State and Southern Miss. He believes Georgia could be the next school to pull the trigger. He wants to return to Tuscaloosa in April for the Tide’s spring game.
One of Jackson's teammates, 2015 offensive lineman Javon Patterson, received an Alabama offer over the weekend as well.
