St. Edward Eagles soar at SPARQ Combine
By Brad Bournival
If Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward wasn’t the preseason Division-I favorite heading into next season, the Eagles certainly gave a sneak peak of what was in store.
Whether it was junior safety/quarterback Jack Walz setting the SPARQ Combine standard early at Massillon, Ohio with a top-10 rating of 107.73 or 2014 right tackle Danny McManamon stepping into the limelight, St. Edward was pushing the envelope.
Then 2015 wide receiver David Dowell and his twin brother Andrew posted strong numbers, and sophomore running back Shaun Crawford excelled as well, as the youth movement pushed forward.
“Our goal is the state championship,” David Dowell said. “We’ll take it one game at a time, one rep at a time and we’ll do everything we can.”
Teams have taken notice big time, as each count multiple BCS schools showing interest.
Whether it’s Walz with five schools showing interest or the Dowell twins with Illinois, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State showing interest, the Eagles are ready to soar again.
But first, it’s a matter of warning the masses they’re ready to reclaim the state title they won in 2010.
“It was just nice to come out and get our ratings,” Andrew Dowell said. “To see where we match up in the nation.”
